The reknowned Sunday Star-Times Designer Garage Sale is busy tagging, stocking and hanging a multitude of designer products in preparation for the nation’s most unique sale of its kind. Taking place on Friday 2nd September from 5pm to 9.30pm and Saturday 3rd September from 10am to 6pm this event is your chance to take home iconic pieces by some of New Zealand's most loved designers!
This year the sale will be spread over the Viaduct Events Centre to encourage you to look around,enjoy the beautiful new venue and see what every area has to offer.
Previous years have seen designers showing their sale stock at amazing prices and consequently attracting hoards of eager shoppers to the Fashion Week venue. This year the sale is set to match last year’s fantastic array of designers and exceed expectations, yet again.

Bettie Monroe
Bettie Monroe is the culmination of a lifelong passion of fashion and design for Lucy Thomas and Helen Fraser, who started out doing their own respective labels and joined forces at the beginning of 2008. Proudly made in New Zealand, Bettie Monroe ignites images of the carefree NZ lifestyle - fun, playful, with an outdoorsy colour palette. "Fashion to us is about playing and creativity. With fun classic details, beautiful fabrics and flattering elegant lines, it is ideal casual wear which is powerfully feminine” say Thomas and Fraser. “We make the clothing that we love to wear, so I suppose then that it reflects the life that we live, which is filled with lots of good energy, imagination and humour". Bettie Monroe’s flagship retail shop opened October 2008 in Whangamata, with the most recent shop in Mount Maunganui opening in December 2009.
Bassanova
When Claudine Garcia de Paiva emigrated from Brazil to Mount Maunganui in 2000, she brought with her a few boxes of Havaianas. Claudine knew Kiwis would fall in love with Havaianas and love ‘em we do! Claudine’s passion for sharing Brazilian culture with New Zealand saw the launch of Bossanova in 2008. A selection of leather boots, sandals and accessories all handmade in Brazil. Bossanova is more then a brand it is the concept of a life style that stands for the simple yet sophisticated free spirit mindset. Claudine Paiva is now the director of Bossanova Enterprises Ltd and continues to search for new ways to bring Brazilian flair to the place she now calls her home
Chaos & Harmony
This New Zealand based boutique shoe brand is driven by the paradox that is: Chaos & Harmony. A pleasing combination of unexpected elements formed into a strong, sculptural whole. Each piece an amalgamation of soft & hard textures and crisp & complex lines. Chaos & Harmony is all about creating quality footwear for the lively, spontaneous, authentic and influential woman.An obsessive passion for shoes developed early for Lead Designer and Managing Director, Rebecca Anderson. In order to transform this love into an art form she pursued study at the Instituto Europeo di Design in Rome, Italy. Upon her return, Rebecca collaborated with long-time friend and colleague, Renee Ryland, to form the now well established brand.
Deborah Sweeney
Deborah Sweeney is a high end, youth oriented, New Zealand women’s wear label. Her clever designs are a colourful, eclectic and feminine mix of casual and tailored silhouettes. Deborah Sweeney pieces are infinitely wearable and made with carefully chosen natural fibres and high quality fabrics. Collections often have a vintage feel, or are retro inspired, with much attention given to detailing.
Deborah returned to New Zealand to establish her label in 2002, after working for Jill Stuart in New York and designing for High Street stores, including Topshop and H&M, in London. She previously completed a Fashion Diploma at Massey University in Wellington, and also studied accessories at the London Royal College of Fashion. In 2006, Deborah Sweeney won the coveted Air New Zealand Export Award. The collection is now stocked in select boutiques around the globe – from Australia to Japan and the USA. Deborah Sweeney pieces are consistently featured in key fashion publications, including Vogue, Women’s Wear Daily, i-D, Nylon, Jane, Lucky and Elle Magazine
Ingrid Starnes
Ingrid Starnes is a New Zealand designed and made label, established in 2009. The brand is more interested in craft, construction and details than following trends. As a designer Ingrid works to make clothes women will love for years to come.Natural materials and traditional elements are celebrated with vintage laces, embroidery and contemporary takes on classic styles present in the collections. Ingrid designs her signature prints and dyes many silks to custom colourways to ensure that pieces remain exclusive. Ingrid comes from a pattern-making and design background and honed her craft at one of New Zealand’s great fashion houses, Kate Sylvester. Sarah Riley
Sarah Riley is New Zealand's first, and only high fashion shoe designer. Her designs are unique, everything is carefully thought through, from the leathers to the shape and componentry, the heel height, and the way the shoe is designed so it flatters... Kathryn Wilson
Massey University graduate and AMP scholarship winner Kathryn Wilson launched her debut range of leather footwear in 2003. Kathryn’s passion for shoes is apparent in her innovative and stylish designs, using manufacturers in China and Italy with quality components sourced from Europe, combined with Wilson’s design talent, a range of high quality, versatile and affordable footwear has been achieved. The Kathryn Wilson footwear collection has grown over the last seven years and now has over 25 styles per season of both women’s and men’s designs, the brand is sold into 38 fashion boutiques across New Zealand from Keri Keri to Invercargill, 15 stores in Australia and also online. Kathryn has secured a sales agent in Hong Kong who will be representing her for sales and PR in Asia this year and is also talking with an agency based in New York to launch the collection into the USA within the next 12 months.
One of the most exciting developments for 2011 is Kathryn’s development of a diffusion collection, entitled ‘Miss Wilson’. This slightly lower price-point collection will sit underneath the umbrella of Kathryn Wilson, re-issuing popular styles in new colours and developing easy-to-wear styles for high-end, multiple-door fashion stores. Lonely Hearts
Two lonely hearts who met in 2000, Helene Morris and Steve Ferguson are the creative couple behind the label Lonely Hearts. Established in 2003, the New Zealand-based brand combines the pair's backgrounds in fashion and graphic design: Steve, an ex-professional snowboarder, brings a street and punk influence which manifests in a body conscious, DIY aesthetic; whereas Helene’s more delicate sensibilities draw from a long family history of dressmaking, textiles and an obsession with vintage lingerie.
Informed by pop culture and shaped by sportswear, Lonely Hearts' garments are wearable, directional and feminine without being overly sweet. These are clothes that capture that indefinable ground between who you want to be, and who you are. Salasai
Established in 2006 by designer Kirsha Whitcher, the Salasai label has fast gained a reputation as being a major player in New Zealand fashion. Known for its conceptually designed codes on dressing, Whitcher uses her understanding of design and innovative approach to develop a sculptural aesthetically pleasing androgynous fashion brand committed to producing clothing of quality, function and nonchalant grandeur. Sold in leading boutiques throughout New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong, Whitcher’s focus is now on establishing representation in the Asia Pacific and European regions. With a strong creative team of people around her, Salasai is part of the future of genuine New Zealand fashion design
Turet
Turet Knuefermann Autumn/Winter 2011Effortless luxury, relaxed sophistication, clean lines in sensual fabrics – New Zealand designer Turet Knuefermann brings a uniquely European sensibility to every range. For winter, voluminous shapes are given a body-conscious fit, highlighting Turet’s impeccable draping techniques. Sumptuous silks, fine knits, faux furs and sequins reveal a powerfully feminine ideal. "I usually sculpt directly onto the body and only sketch very roughly, if at all,” says Turet. “I’m fascinated by the impact that fabric can have when combined with a basic un-worked shape, the way it looks and moves and creates an understated sense of drama.” Stand out pieces include the easy leisure wear, exquisitely constructed evening gowns and a knee-length coat in fur trimmed wool. “This is a reimagining of the coat my father gave my mother when I was born. It has a 70s, “less is more” aesthetic, yet is still extremely opulent.”
